New Zealand cricket star Sophie Devine is set to make her return to international cricket after being named in the White Ferns squad for their upcoming three-match T20 series against Australia starting this Friday.
Devine Ready to Return After Break
Devine stepped down as New Zealand's T20 captain following their World Cup victory last year. She missed the domestic Super Smash tournament, the Women's Premier League (WPL) in India, and recent series against Sri Lanka to focus on her well-being.
"It's nice to have had some time to reset and refocus, and I'm really looking forward to getting back out there with the girls," said the 35-year-old allrounder in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket.
Kerr and Tahuhu Strengthen the Squad
The White Ferns will also see the return of star allrounder Melie Kerr and experienced seamer Lea Tahuhu. Kerr had missed recent ODI and T20 series against Sri Lanka due to her WPL commitments, where she played a pivotal role in Mumbai Indians' title win. Her last T20I appearance was a standout performance in the T20 World Cup final, scoring 43 runs off 38 balls and taking 3/24.
Tahuhu returns after overcoming a series of hamstring injuries that have kept her out of international cricket since December.
Coach Excited for Key Players' Comeback
New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer expressed his excitement about the trio's return, highlighting their experience and leadership.
"They're three key players who bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the group," Sawyer said. "Soph's had some time away from the game and is now in a space where she's looking forward to getting back on the park. Everyone knows the power she possesses and what an asset she is to any team."
Squad Additions and Captaincy Details
The squad also welcomes back batter Bella James, who overcame a quad strain. Polly Inglis retains her spot in the squad with wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze still recovering from a hip flexor strain.
Veteran Suzie Bates will continue as interim T20 captain, with New Zealand yet to appoint a permanent replacement for Devine.
Australia's Squad and Series Details
Australia will be led by Tahlia McGrath, standing in for Alyssa Healy, who is recovering from a foot injury sustained during the Ashes.
