Delhi Capitals Crush Mumbai Indians to Reclaim Top Spot in WPL 2025
Delhi Capitals stormed to the top of the WPL 2025 standings with a commanding nine-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. This win marked their second triumph over the defending champions this season, courtesy of an outstanding bowling display led by Jess Jonassen and a blistering 85-run opening partnership between Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma.
Mumbai’s Struggles with the Bat
On a typically good batting surface, Mumbai Indians were restricted to a modest 123/9 in 20 overs. They started well, with Yastika Bhatia pulling the first ball of the match for a boundary. Alongside Hayley Matthews, Mumbai had a steady beginning, but Shikha Pandey struck in the final over of the PowerPlay, dismissing Bhatia for 11. Annabel Sutherland then removed Matthews in the following over, putting Mumbai on the back foot.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt attempted to rebuild, taking 18 runs off Titas Sadhu in the 10th over. However, Jonassen’s reintroduction turned the tide. She trapped Harmanpreet in front and then dismissed Sciver-Brunt with a well-flighted delivery. Minnu Mani further dismantled the middle order, taking two wickets in a single over, including a stunning catch in the deep by Sutherland to remove Amelia Kerr. Mumbai collapsed, losing five wickets for just 23 runs.
Lanning, Verma Power Delhi to Easy Win
Chasing 124, Delhi Capitals' openers made the result a mere formality. Lanning and Verma attacked early, racing to 57 in the PowerPlay. Verma took charge, smashing two sixes off Kerr before falling for 43. Lanning remained unbeaten on 60*, guiding her team home in just 14.3 overs. This emphatic win not only secured the top spot for Delhi but also significantly boosted their Net Run Rate.
